You will soon have to download an update for your PS3, unfortunately, it is just for disabling the ability to have other operating systems installed on your PS3.

The PS3 will be getting a new firmware update this week, version 3.21. Unfortunately, it’s not the kind of update we like to see as it’s only function is the removal of the “Install Other OS” feature of the older generation fat models.
Due to recent security concerns, Sony has decided that this feature has become too much of a risk. The update will be made available on April 1st, 2010 so we can’t help but wonder, could this be an April Fools Day joke?
Of course, you can always decide not to install the update but doing so will disable some rather important features:
* Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
* Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
* Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
* Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
Should you have another Operating System installed be sure to back up all content stored on that portion of the hard drive before you update your PS3 as you won’t be able to access it afterwards.
Naturally, people have already voiced their disappointment with Sony’s decision to remove other OS support on both the US and EU PlayStation.Blogs. If this truly is an April Fools Day joke then we’ll find out soon enough and all be able to breathe a sigh of relief. At least the small population of people who actually use the feature will be able to.
